In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Vanderbilt University took significant steps to enhance its engagement with the Nashville community through the joint efforts of students, faculty, and administrators. One of the initiatives was the establishment of the "Free University" by the students, offering a range of classes to Nashville residents on topics including short wave radio and the arts.

Additionally, the "open campus" policy allowed the Nashville community to actively participate in Vanderbilt campus events, including the Rites of Spring Music Festival, which began in 1971. As a result, many Nashville residents were able to attend and enjoy the festivities, fostering a stronger connection between Vanderbilt and the Nashville community.
